The X-Files: Mulder & Scully Meet the Were-Monster Recap

Over its nine-season run on Fox, The X-Files became known to do humorous or “goofy” episodes. Many of these were done by Darin Morgan, and with this X-Files revival feeling like a condensed version of the show it’s only fitting that we get a new classic from Morgan with Mulder & Scully Meet the Were-Monster.

The episode was described by some early reviews as an instant classic, and it absolutely is.

It opens with two familiar characters from the classic episode “War of the Coprophages”, and then spirals into a goofy monster story that takes Mulder and Scully into Scooby Doo territory and delivers enough laughs to keep it right up there with the funniest episodes of the series.

I love the older Mulder at the beginning going through his old case files of monsters and realizing they’re all hoaxes, only to have Scully tell him they have a new monster case. Mulder coming into the 21st century with his smart phone and trying to get a picture of the monster is one of the highlights of the episode and still makes me laugh when I think back to it.

This was a great “gateway” episode for people who weren’t X-Files fans before to be entertained with, while it looked back to the great days of the original run enough that fans would love it as well. This is by far the best of the mini-series so far, although we still have the horror episode to go and another Mythology one.
