Aquaman Spoiler Policy: Aquaman isn’t out until December and the movie is so good it’ll represent the start of a new era for the DCEU with films such as Shazam and Wonder Woman 2 following. As such the movie doesn’t deserve to be completely spoiled ten months out from release. People should be able enjoy Wan’s underwater epic on the big screen without knowing everything about it prior to release. That’s why this far out I won’t be touching some of the big story reveals in the third act, and may not even do it closer to release.
That said, people have been asking for more details so I will be posting some details about the movie and how it plays out. Please be considerate of people who want to avoid spoilers when sharing this information on social media. Also please be aware that this information comes from an unfinished version of the movie and some of this may not make it into the final film.
There have been some people comparing Aquaman to an Indiana Jones movie, when a more accurate comparison would be Romancing the Stone as Mera is very much the co-lead in the movie and their quest has a similar tone to that film.
When we last left Arthur and Mera they were hiding out in the mouth of a while as Orm believed them to be dead. They share some bonding time here, and they know that they have to go to the Sahara desert to begin their quest for the Trident of Atlan.
Now at this point there does appear to already be a large sequence cut from the film, which will likely be on the deleted scenes when it hits Blu-Ray. There are set photos of Arthur and Mera wading in the surf as well as people credited on IMDB as extras in Casablanca. That whole sequence appears to be cut, likely for pacing issues. It’s not some nefarious evil conspiracy by Warner to keep Wan down, so don’t start the #ReleaseTheWanCut stupidity, it’s likely due to keeping things moving into the second act and a bit on the streets of Casablanca wold slow things down too much.
From the whale scene we go directly to Arthur and Mera in a cargo plane over the Sahara desert. Mera comments how she’s never been this high above the surface, and uses a GPS tracker to find the location of the lost tribe. The two of them shock their pilot by jumping out of the plane without parachutes. Meanwhile, Orm watches their location on a map as Mera’s bracelet had a tracker in it and is shocked that they live.
As Arthur and Mera walk through the desert she attacks the surface for being so dry and the land-dwellers for polluting the sky and melting the ice caps. Arthur tells her that the leaders suck, but not everyone does. As they come to the spot Mera was tracking, Arthur falls through a hole and Mera says “If you’re the one true king we’re doomed,” as she jumps in after him.
Inside they find an ancient temple with a circular contraption. Arthur tries placing the cylinder that Vulko gave him earlier, but nothing happens. Arthur realizes that nobody has seen this place since it’s become a desert, and Mera comments that he does his best thinking when he’s not actually thinking. The cylinder needs water to work, so she uses her power to pull sweat from Arthur to moisten the cylinder, and then it activates.
A hologram of King Atlan appears and tells them that the trident is in the “Hidden Sea”. They realize their next stop in solving the puzzle resides in Sicily.
And that’s where we’ll stop for right now. The next article will be what people have been waiting for…Black Manta!
