Warner Bros Gave the Troops a Cool Veteran’s Day Surprise

News is just now starting to hit the ‘net, but it sounds like Warner Brothers treated the troops on Veteran’s Day night to an advanced screening of Justice League!

Reactions are starting to flow in to places like Reddit, and there may be people reacting on other social media platforms, but for Warner to do this for them on Veteran’s Day is seriously cool.

There have been a couple press screenings of Justice League over the last two weeks, but there hasn’t been a large public screening of the movie just yet. The big premiere is Monday night and that’s also when advanced screenings open to fans and local media will begin.

That means the troops were the first outside of the press to see the final version of Justice League! Big props to Warner for doing this on Veteran’s Day.

Don’t Expect Another Trailer for The Last Jedi Until October

Rogue One spoiled everyone. With two teaser trailers, a BTS reel, and then a full trailer; we got a lot of footage from the movie last year. As the marketing for The Last Jedi was matching the schedule of Rogue One so far, many (including me) expect a new trailer in August. But it doesn’t sound like that will happen.

It sounds now like The Last Jedi is following the same trailer schedule as The Force Awakens, Revenge of the Sith, Attack of the Clones, and The Phantom Menace. Meaning one real teaser and then a full trailer.

“But they did a teaser for The Force Awakens in November of 2014!”

That little announcement teaser was an anomaly. It was something Disney CEO Bob Iger wanted to release in order to show off his $4.2 billion toy to fans and investors.

Traditionally, under George, Lucasfilm would do two trailers for each Prequel. A short teaser (such as the famous TPM one or the “breathing” AOTC one) and then a full trailer months later.

It seems like that’s how Lucasfilm is handling the “Saga” episodes of Star Wars now. It’s back to two trailers. Rogue One was a special case as they were really afraid how a standalone Star Wars movie would be accepted, so they did a lot of footage through 2016.

So we have Force Friday II coming up in a couple of weeks, and then in mid-October we’ll get the final theatrical poster and trailer for The Last Jedi. We’re almost there.

How the Rey/Jedha Theory Fits the Canon Timeline

I’ve heard some complaints about how the theory that Rey was from Jedha (as was Luke’s Academy) doesn’t fit with the established canon timeline from books such as Bloodline. But it can actually fit.

It’s entirely logical to believe that Rey’s people were the Clan of Toribota, and they were wiped out at some time on Jedha before the slaughter of Luke’s Academy on the same planet. That’s the connection she and Luke share. It’s not a blood relation. Her people and his people were both wiped out on the same planet.

Rey’s parents, fleeing the slaughter on Jedha, dropped her off on Jakku to save her from the people who killed the clan. It’s believable that they then were caught and killed (“Whomever you’re waiting for on Jakku, they’re never coming back.”), and the whereabouts of Rey weren’t known. Would explain Kylo’s “WHAT GIRL?” line in TFA especially if he knew a girl escaped the clan slaughter.

We also know that Han and Leia knew Ben had darkness in him. Han said, “There was too much Vader in him.” Like his grandfather before him, who slaughtered an entire village on Tatooine long before he became Vader, it’s possible that Snoke’s seduction of Ben began when he lured him with leadership power and made him the “Master of the Knights of Ren”. Snoke would use a teenaged (16-19 year old) Ben to do raids on people he wanted dead (like the Clan of Toribota).

Leia sees this happening with their son. Sees him hanging out with a bad biker gang, but not entirely aware of how evil they are. She decides to send him to Luke, “That’s why I wanted him to train with Luke. I just never should have sent him away.” So Ben spends his early to mid twenties with Uncle Luke, only to betray him and the Jedi around age 24 or 25, as he’s supposed to be around 29 in The Force Awakens. Bloodline is set about four or five years before the events of TFA and Ben is with Luke at that time.

With the Knights of Ren slaughter of the Clan taking place behind Han & Leia’s back (especially since Han was off being a racer at the time) when Ben was in his mid-to-late teens, it can fit in the timeline where Rey’s Clan is killed when she is a child and then Luke’s Academy is wiped out just a few years before The Force Awakens.

It all fits.

Thank You Internet: Ben Affleck No Longer Directing ‘The Batman’

Ben Affleck Direct Batman

After withstanding endless annoying questions about The Batman while trying to promote other projects, Ben Affleck has stepped away from directing the movie.

Affleck and Warner Brothers issued a statement tonight (via Variety):

“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

While the bomb of Affleck’s Live By Night might have had a small part to do with this, there was an immense amount of pressure on Affleck when it came to directing a Batman movie. The internet and critics would not let up on him a few months ago, and I even predicted he’d probably step away after seeing him get annoyed at the endless interrogation people were putting him through:

So I hope you’re happy, internet. Affleck (who directed a Best Picture winner) is no longer directing The Batman.

Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5 Begin Filming in August

Avatar

The multiple delays for the first Avatar sequel have made its existence as something as a joke, but now James Cameron has given a date when motion capture will begin; and they will be doing all of the sequels at once.

In an interview with the Daily Beast, Cameron confirmed the sequels will be underway this year:

“The thing is, my focus isn’t on Avatar 2. My focus is on Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5 equally. That’s exactly how I’m approaching it. They’ve all been developed equally. I’ve just finished the script to Avatar 5. I’m now starting the process of active prep. I’ll be working with the actors in the capture volume in August, so I’m booked in production every day between now and then. Our volume is up and running, and everything is designed, and so we’re going full-guns right now. I feel like I’ve been let out of jail, because I’ve been in the writing cave for the last two years. I’m actually enjoying life. I don’t enjoy writing. I wouldn’t wish writing on a dog.”

Avatar 2 is currently scheduled for December 21, 2018. We’ll have to wait and see if a year is enough time to get all of the effects done for the movie…

The Final Rogue One Theatrical Trailer is Here!

rogueone-theatricaltrailer

Finally learn what Rogue One actually means in the full theatrical trailer released this morning!

Fans have debated what Rogue One means since the first title reveal and this trailer confirms that it’s the call-sign for the team that goes in and steals the Death Star plans. Kind of fitting.

The trailer is awesome, and feels like Star Wars. There’s even something shown in it that The Force Awakens lacked: a space battle with X-Wings. There’s no red lightsaber action, but you do get Vader (no dialog from James Earl Jones though).

The NES Returns to Stores This November!

nes-classicThis morning Nintendo announced a new all-in-one version of the classic Nintendo Entertainment System loaded with thirty games that will go on sale November 11th. These are similar to the Chinese-made Genesis and Atari 2600 “remakes” that have been sold in stores over previous years, but as this one is actually made by Nintendo you won’t have to deal with a bunch of bogus knock-off games padding out the list.

For $59.99 you’ll get these thirty games loaded on the system. This is pretty much a “Greatest Hits” of the NES era with some of the best games ever made included:

  • Balloon Fight
  • BUBBLE BOBBLE
  • Castlevania
  • Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest
  • Donkey Kong
  • Donkey Kong Jr.
  • DOUBLE DRAGON II: THE REVENGE
  • Dr. Mario
  • Excitebike
  • FINAL FANTASY®
  • Galaga
  • GHOSTS’N GOBLINS®
  • GRADIUS
  • Ice Climber
  • Kid Icarus
  • Kirby’s Adventure
  • Mario Bros.
  • MEGA MAN® 2
  • Metroid
  • NINJA GAIDEN
  • PAC-MAN
  • Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream
  • StarTropics
  • SUPER C
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • TECMO BOWL
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

nes-classic-2

The box will include the system, one controller, and an AC adaptor (the UK edition won’t include the AC adaptor. Additional controllers will be sold for $9.99. This is probably going to be a hot seller this Christmas. I know I’ll be grabbing one immediately.
