Exclusive Details on The Mandarin and Fin Fang Foom in Shang-Chi

Things have been a little slow for Marvel news lately, but with productions starting back up after the shutdowns we’re starting to hear some cool things about the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe entries from sources close to the productions; beginning with next May’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

The first bit might have been included in some of those “plot leaks” that appeared on places like 4Chan, but it means at least part of those are true. When the story starts The Mandarin and Shang-Chi are not enemies, and The Mandarin acts as a mentor figure for Shang-Chi. There might have been a plot leak that said that Shang-Chi worked for The Mandarin, and that would fit with him being a mentor to the young Master of Kung Fu when the movie starts.

Even bigger (literally) is the dragon Fin Fang Foom. We’ve known for a while that he’d appear in the movie, but now there are more details as to how he fits into the story and why we haven’t seen the giant dragon in the MCU yet.

Doctor Strange introduced the concept of magic to the MCU and showed us that there were sorcerers all around the world. That movie established that three Sanctums together helped protect the Earth, and it appears that concept of a magical trinity will continue in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings where there is a trio of wizards who are tasked with keeping Fin Fang Foom dormant. Obviously something is going to happen to them to cause the dragon to awaken in the movie.

Now this part is just my speculation, but what if Mordo carries through with his “too many sorcerers” mantra and unknowingly unleashes Fin Fang Foom by taking out those wizards? There have been some plot leaks that say Mordo shows up in the movie as a cameo, so it’d be a really cool connection back to that post-credits stinger in Doctor Strange to show Mordo robbing these wizards of their magic, only to unleash a giant dragon.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has resumed production in Australia and is currently scheduled for release in May of 2021. Hopefully we’ll learn some more details, such as more cast members, as we get closer to that release date.

Rumor: Idris Elba’s Suicide Squad Character Revealed!

This week, James Gunn made some news on social media by telling Idris Elba that no one had correctly guessed his character in next year’s The Suicide Squad. People had speculated that he was Bronze Tiger, Vigilante, and even Sportsman. Now it appears it’s none of those and we may know who he’s playing before the reveal at DC FanDome later today.

Yesterday in a Western US city, a lucky test audience got to see an early screening of The Suicide Squad. According to Splashreport, Idris Elba is playing Bloodsport in the movie. When you think back to the spy photos of him on set and what his costume looked like, that actually fits. Even more exciting, they say the villain is the cosmic starfish…Starro! Something that wacky facing off against the Squad is definitely something James Gunn would do, even if the giant starfish only does something like take over the mind of a dictator or something.

We’ll have to see if this ends up being true in a few hours when James Gunn is expected to reveal who is playing who in The Suicide Squad at FanDome, but Splashreport has a pretty good track record with these sort of test screening scoops.

Rumor: International Theaters Move The New Mutants to September 3rd?

The New Mutants rollercoaster is never going to end. After international marketing flip-flopped on the August 28th date last week, changing it to “coming soon” and then back to August 28th, now some international theaters may have delayed the movie.

A user on Reddit spotted that the two biggest theater chains in Thailand have move the movie to September 3rd (movies come out on Thursdays there according to them).

While they believe this is to make room for Tenet, and that does make sense, September 3rd is also the day before that “fake” Australian TV spot for The New Mutants said it would be streaming on Disney+. It’s definitely an interesting coincidence that international theaters are moving the movie to that date that popped up last month.

Perhaps we’ll hear some kind of update on this whole situation at Disney’s earnings call tomorrow.

Clown is in Hawkeye and Marvel Has an Actor in Mind

Earlier this week The Illuminerdi ran a story about a casting grid of Marvel casting an Eastern European character between the ages of 20 and 30. Many people assumed this would be for Clown, a character who played a major role in Matt Fraction’s run on Hawkeye.

It does appear that casting is for Kazimierz Kazimierczak as the character will be in the Disney+ Hawkeye series, but before anyone wants to rush to audition for the part; it sounds like Marvel already has an actor in mind for the role. I won’t name him here (because it’s not close to being final), but the person they are eyeing lands in the higher end of that casting age range and they’re probably best known for playing a clown. Which would make it pretty funny if they ended up playing another clown in Hawkeye.

In Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye, Clown stabs Clint in his ears with arrows; causing Hawkeye to once again be deaf. Hawkeye was deaf for most of the 80s and 90s prior to being reborn in the Franklinverse during Heroes Reborn. From then until the Fraction run he was able to hear, so Clown restored him to the version of the character a lot of people were familiar with. There have been rumors that the casting of Echo in Hawkeye would mean they’re telling a version of the story where Clint loses his hearing, and including Clown would support that.

New Wonder Woman 1984 Trailer Rumored for August 12th

We’re less than a month away from DC FanDome, but we might be getting a new look at Wonder Woman 1984 before that online convention. We’ve only had one trailer for the movie so far, however there may be one coming in just a couple of weeks.

According to TrailerTrack, there will be a new WW84 trailer on August 12th:

Along with an extended look at Tenet said to be initially intended for the cancelled CinemaCon 2020 convention in Las Vegas just a few months ago, the first trailer for Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune, and a new look at Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 are planned to screen as part of the re-release.

Originally WB had planned to include footage from their upcoming slate with the Inception re-release on July 17th. As theaters weren’t open and that didn’t happen, this August 12th the second attempt to get that footage released. It’s likely the Wonder Woman trailer will be released online at FanDome on the 22nd.

Lucasfilm Rumored to Be Moving Forward Without Ray Park as Maul

Over the weekend there was some…drama…surrounding Ray Park’s Instagram account. I’m not going to dig into that because we don’t know exactly what happened there and what is true or not true about what was going on there. However, there’s a rumor going around that he might not return as Maul in any of the future Disney+ stuff.

According to LRM Online, who has a real good track record from back when they were known as Latino Review, Lucasfilm has decided to move forward without Ray Park playing Dark Maul’s body.

And I can kind of bacSolo: A Star Wars Story Expected to Continue on Disney+k this up. When I heard about the Solo continuation yesterday I was told that it was unsure if Park would be returning. If LRM Online is hearing they’ve decided to move on, then chances are that’s what has happened.

Right now it can’t be said for sure if they’re talking to Sam Witwer or not, but perhaps this will be his chance to play Darth Maul in both voice and body in live action.

Tarkin Rumored to Appear in the Cassian Andor Disney+ Series

The Cassian Andor series is expected to begin production sometime early next year, closely following the Obi-Wan Kenobi show, and now comes a rumor about one of the characters we will see in the series.

According to Kessel Run Transmissions, Tarkin will be appearing in the Cassian Andor Disney+ series. Right now it’s not known exactly how he’ll fit in, but obviously it’ll be the CG Tarkin like we saw in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

As Cassian is naturally going to be set before Rogue One (since both him and Tarkin are dead after that movie and A New Hope) this means we could see Tarkin beginning to oversee the Death Star project. We’ve had some canon Tarkin backstory in the Tarkin novel, one of the first novels in the new canon, as well as his appearances in Rebels; so they do have stuff to build off of for his appearance in the series.

Marvel Rumored to be Developing an ‘Illuminati’ Project

With the Marvel Studios production machine starting to ramp back up after a few months of being shut down, there are a lot of things being put into development and early stages of production. We’ve been hearing some things over the last couple of months, and today brings a new one.

According to The Illuminerdi, Marvel Studios has begun development of some kind of project based on the Illuminati team from the comics. Much like Ultimatum, this comes from casting information and as Illuminerdi explains these often will just show the title and the fact that Kevin Feige is producing it. That means there’s no way to tell if this is a movie or a Disney+ show, but with the way Marvel Studios is producing things now the lines between those are really becoming blurred.

In the comics the Illuminati consisted of Tony Stark, Professor X, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt, Namor, and Reed Richards. All of those are possible in the MCU, and since Tony is dead they could have someone like Black Panther take his place.

When all we have is the title and Feige as a producer to go by it’s hard to speculate exactly what form this will take in the MCU, although it’s possible it could be a Disney+ series involving these characters protecting the MCU from the scale of threats that S.H.I.E.L.D. and S.W.O.R.D. can’t handle. A bunch of big-name characters sitting around a table and pulling the MCU’s strings is the sort of thing that would work better as an episodic series as opposed to a movie.

Again, this seems to be very early, but it’s exciting to see that despite Phase 4 being delayed a little bit Marvel Studios is still charging ahead with their future.

Donald Glover Rumored to Return as Lando

Back in February, I ran a story about the long-rumored Disney+ spin-off for Solo: A Star Wars Story that’s in some form of planning saying that Disney and Lucasfilm were very serious about trying to bring back Lando. At the time I didn’t specify which Lando it was (due to certain people who love debunking), but it was Donald Glover they were trying to bring back.

Today Kessel Run Transmissions reports that they’ve heard that Donald Glover has either signed on or is close to signing on to return as Lando. They stress it’s still early and could still fall through due to how busy he is with other projects. However, it’s a good sign that Lucasfilm’s efforts to get him to come back over the last few months were successful.

Kessel Run Transmissions previously scooped The Bad Batch before Lucasfilm announced it, so they’re building quite a good track record for themselves. Also, this Glover information backs up what I heard back in February about them really wanting to have him return.

The idea I heard back then was for him to appear in the spin-off that’ll likely deal with the Crime Syndicates like Crimson Dawn and Black Sun, but then he’ll get his own Lando series following that. They did set up a Lando series with the ending of The Rise of Skywalker with the original Billy Dee. Even so, Lucasfilm would obviously want flashbacks in that with Glover as well. Which means there are a lot of opportunities for the young Lando to appear in Disney+ shows.

Up next for Star Wars is the second season of The Mandalorian, which will arrive on time in October. Then both the Obi-Wan series and the Cassian Andor series will be filming back-to-back in Pinewood UK. This Solo/Lando show and the rumored Ahsoka series are obviously further out, but with Star Wars Celebration next month cancelled; Lucasfilm could always make reveals of what they’re working on over the next few months.

Rumor: Is New Mutants Streaming on Disney+ September 4th?

Following the indefinite delay of Tenet yesterday, people are wondering what’s going to happen with New Mutants and Mulan. Well now it looks like New Mutants may be headed to Disney+, and it means the movie has another release date.

A user on Reddit captured a trailer for New Mutants on Disney+ claiming that the movie would be streaming on September 4th. The trailer could possibly be fake, so we’ll have to wait and see, but if it is a fake it’s done very well. It looks like the Disney+ promos, and it makes sense for them to finally release New Mutants if theaters are going to remain closed for a long time.

The trailer is similar to this TV spot, however it’s edited differently and includes some shots that weren’t in other trailers; including a new angle of the infra-red image of Danielle Moonstar on a monitor. A version of that shot was in a previous trailer, but this one is at a different angle. The trailer appears to be from Australia, and it’s not uncommon for things like this to leak internationally.

People have speculated that the New Mutants panel at SDCC@Home on Thursday could announce a streaming date as opposed to its original August 28th theatrical release.
