For a couple weeks there have been some sites trying to spread a bogus rumor that HBO Max would be producing a Ben Affleck-starring Batman series. Well, today it’s been revealed that there is a Batman series headed to the streaming service, but it’s a spin-off of The Batman set in that same universe.
Today HBO Max announced that Matt Reeves and Warner Brothers TV are working on an untitled Gotham Central series set in the same universe as The Batman. Terence Winter, the creator of Boardwalk Empire, will oversee and write the series.
Matt Reeves said, “This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream.”
“We are so fortunate to have such great partners in Matt, Dylan, and Terry and unprecedented access to a wealth of IP from our partners at Warner Bros. and DC,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max.
This makes a lot of sense for them to use HBO Max to compliment the DC films. We know Bad Robot is working on a Justice League Dark show for HBO Max, and there’s a Zatanna movie on the way, so based on this The Batman news it’s possible those two projects will connect as well. It’s very similar to what Marvel Studios is doing with the Disney+ series and their movies, and it’s a smart thing for DC to do with their characters as well.
