Spider-Man: Far From Home is set minutes after Avengers: Endgame. This has been known for a very long time, and has been confirmed multiple times over the last year. With the movie coming out after Endgame, Sony had a very challenging job dancing around potential Avengers spoilers in the Far From Home trailer. As good as they did to avoid spoilers, there may be some clues left in the trailer to what would be the biggest spoiler in the history of the MCU.
One thing people immediately noticed was the big check Happy is carrying at the start of the trailer. Tony Stark made Pepper the CEO of Stark Industries during the Iron Man trilogy, and he confirmed in Avengers: Age of Ultron that she was still running the company. But Pepper’s name on the check isn’t the surprising thing, she probably still runs the company, it’s who the check is from that could be surprising. The signature says that Pepper is the “Co-founder and chair, Stark Relief Foundation”. There’s a foundation set up in Tony Stark’s name with a lot of money that’s writing checks for charity:
Then there’s the sequence of shots where Peter looks at the Stark suit in his closet. The costume that Tony Stark made for him. Watch the look on his face and his body language as he closes his closet door. Peter seems depressed over something, and that suit reminds him of it:
Finally is Happy Hogan’s line in the trailer where he tells Peter that he’s all alone. The scene is on one of Tony Stark’s planes, and the one shot of Happy makes it seem really somber. Even bigger, this is a guy who in the last movie didn’t like Peter much. While it’s true that Peter proved himself to Happy and Tony at the end of Homecoming, it seems like this guy who originally was annoyed at this kid from Queens is having a heart-to-heart sit down with him, almost as if something life-shattering has happened to the two of them:
With all of that in mind, remember what Kevin Feige said about Spider-Man: Far From Home when he was interviewed by IGN about it last year:
“What is it like to try to go back to a normal life after what happens in this movie [Infinity War]? Not to mention what happens in the next [Avengers] movie.”
“It’s fun to see that, because he can represent, you know, the world as a whole, as they try to move forward,” Feige said. “And you can do it in a way that is tonally unique, and tonally different than, certainly, the two Avengers films that people are about to see.”
Something devastating to Marvel fans is going to happen in Avengers: Endgame. Something so devastating that in order to cope with it, they’re going to need a surrogate in the form of Peter Parker to deal with their grief. Based on the reactions to The Snap in Avengers: Infinity War, some people may not be able to handle what they’re about to go through with Avengers: Endgame.
